Choose Your Own Career Change Adventure (aka Coaching Apps are Now Open Theres Lots More to Offer! aka My Offerings Through The Years) - When I Grow Up

Choose Your Own Career Change Adventure (aka Coaching Apps are Now Open Theres Lots More to Offer! aka My Offerings Through The Years) - When I Grow Up For what seems like forever and ever, I had one way to work with me one-on-one: 12 45-minute sessions over 4 months. The pricing sat between $3K-$4K. I knew it was expensive. I knew it was exclusive. I knew I wanted to offer ways to get my dream career guidance without the hefty price tag. I launched a membership site for under $50/month. It tanked, and I spent time and money retooling it. It did well enough that I ran it for about two years (I think), but I ultimately shut it down because I didnt want to charge to run a private Facebook group, essentially. Too icky. I created a group program to help peeps discover their passion-based career and charged $500 a person. I didnt get the numbers I hoped so I offered it as a 2-for-1. I did it again with similar results and knew I was gonna shelve it. So, I did a CreativeLive class. And then another. All my knowledge on creating your dream career and ditching your day job for under $100. Sure, you have to watch over a dozen hours of video and do it all yourself, and everyone who didnt want to do 12-sessions-for-~$3500 wasnt down with it. I knew I wanted to offer more hands-on availability with this, so I launched my Career Change Masterclass at the end of last year. It essentially combined both CreativeLive programs into one four month course. I capped it at 15 people, offered biweekly group calls and a one-on-one session. I charged $2K, a significant discount from my 12-sessions-for-$3500 program. I got 1 sign-up, which doesnt a group course make. I cancelled the whole thing. And yes, I havent talked about this til now because I was embarrassed. But now I have space, and used this failure as a learning experience, and feel its important to share with you so you know that a business owner who makes six figures has been in business for 8 years can still fucking tank a launch. Im still convinced it was the combination of the time of year + the price tag that was all wrong. I threw up my hands and went back to the drawing board. Whats the sweet spot that overlaps what I  want to do with what my prospective clients want me to offer? I felt like I knew nothing, so I did something crazy. I asked you to make me an offer I couldnt refuse. And instead of getting the 3-5 clients I wanted to fill my month, I got 13 to fill 3-4 months. I wasnt once insulted with an offer or asked to work for nothing. I got a taste of what people who wanted to work with me wanted when they didnt want/need 12 sessions or have/wanna spend ~$3500. And I made just a bit less per session than I usually do. It was a marvel. Really. The only launch Ive done solo that I could deem a total success. The icing on the cake? That I only had to write 1 blog post, put up less than a handful of social media updates about it, and send out a couple of newsletters to make it work. It was the exception to the launching rule, and I loved that. Since that revelation in January coupled with my Word of the Year, Acceptance, at the forefront of my mind Ive been on a mission to streamline. To simplify. And seemingly contradictory but actually not at all to expand. I put out a survey to get a pulse on my people. I scheduled 15 backscratching calls (where I got on the call with someone who filled out the survey who I wanted to talk to move, and theyd ask me questions for 15 min and then Id ask them my questions for 15 minutes) and noticed the offers that were being crafted on the spot. There was such overlap with what was needed and wanted, and now I feel much more certain with the offers Im crafting hitting that sweet spot. So, if you click on over to my coaching page, youll find (a) a no-obligation application to fill out so I can make sure Id be the best person to help ya with your dream career goals and challenges and (b) a pretty nebulous packages start at X sessions for $XYZ. The former will get you a personal response and a link to my consultation calendar if I think wed be a good fit (and some referrals if I think were not), and the latter will be broken down into these choose-your-career-change-adventure options: 1 75-minute one-off session for those who want to work through 1 specific challenge or goal as it related to dream career discovery or launching a biz.   6 45-minute sessions over 2 months that are based around testing a business idea and planning to launch your biz. Well work together so you can get clarity around a guinea pig offer, snag a guinea pig client, deliver said offer, articulate a mission/message/pitch for your biz and plan a Phase One (aka the-most-impactful-yet-cost-and-time-effective way) to launch said biz. 12 45-min sessions over 4 months to give you dream business clarity reality. This is for those who dont know what you wanna be when you grow up, but are ready to start  doing the work to get the clarity and make it a reality (can you tell I love that rhyme?).   I also have a really exciting small group coaching offer for my former clients, which includes  6 months of support for those getting ready to leave their jobs. Well have monthly topic-based calls (around things like goal setting, time management, money matters, etc), a private Facebook group, the ability to do one-on-one sessions at a discount, and open office hours. If youve coached with me before, keep your eyes on your Inbox this week for more details and a registration link! Im thrilled to be opening this up to work with more of you in the way I love to work with the way that you want to work with me. Im also excited to see what about this  works and what, well, doesnt. One of the biggest lessons Ive learned as a business owner is that nothing is a failure when you see everything as a lesson. After 8 years, I still keep my Nancy Drew hat on and give myself permission to pivot, time to (re)assess, and space to grow.

Perhaps taking a course to improve your skills may make the difference in whether you are selected. Even if it doesnt, it adds to your skills and shows that you keep on top of the latest information. This can leave a positive impression on recruiters.3. Work on Interviewing SkillsThe all-important interview can make or break getting a job. Polish your interview skills by practicing in front of friends or family or even in front of a mirror. Remember that you will probably be asked to tell the recruiter about yourself. Kee p this response under two minutes and include education, what you accomplished that benefitted your previous job and how you can be an asset for the current job opening.4. If searching job boards online isnt helping, maybe its time to expand your job hunting by using oth er means.6. 4 Unexpected Ways to Shine on Your Resume

4 Unexpected Ways to Shine on Your Resume 4 Unexpected Ways to Shine on Your Resume4 Unexpected Ways to Shine on Your Resume You can increase your chances of getting hired without resorting to stunts. By Dominique Rodgers Monster Contributing Writer Gimmicky or stunt resumes are almost always a terrible idea. Someone somewherbeie once had his resume delivered with a pizza and subsequently got the job, leading others to believe this type of thing welches helpful. Its not. Theres no reason, however, you cant stray a little from the typical resume format to really shine. Here are four non-gimmicky resume tips that will lift you above the crowd.Highlight your skills and character Charlie Harary likes to hire for fit in terms of both skills and character. The partner in venture capital firm H3 Co. and professor at the Sy Syms School of Business at Yeshiva University, sees a lot of resumes. Most blend together but the ones that really catch his interest show both the candidates solid character and specific skills related to the position to which theyre applying. Harary says he likes to see specifics about skills instead of vague phrases like assisted with or worked closely on because those dont convey skill information. Hed rather know if you leuchtdiode the project, drafted documents or made coffee and what skills you used in that specific position. If you identify a few of your key skills, you may hit the one that the company needs, he explains. You are showing the company that you are bold, introspective and articulate enough to understand your unique value. In terms of character, Harary says he likes to see examples that will showcase someones inner self. In an economy that pivots and recreates itself so much, they want employees that possess traits like grit, humility, teamwork and compassion. He sees this when a candidate includes information about working their way through college or doing volunteer work to help others . What may seem irrelevant to some can demonstrate sought-after qualities to others, he explains. I remember hiring an employee just because she added that she worked in a restaurant when she was in high school. I called her in and she told me that her parents couldnt afford much and she has been working since she was 12. I hired her on the spot.Use hyperlinks When you submit your resume electronically, use hyperlinks to highlight the companies youve worked for, advises Mark Slack, career adviser at Resume Genius, an online resume building tool. Its a great way of making your resume transparent, easy to research, modern, and unconventional. Hyperlinking also makes your resume look interesting and aesthetically pleasing so its a win-win. Its also a good idea to link to any online recommendations, portfolios or publications you mention in your resume, says Stacy Lindenberg, owner of Talent Seed Consulting, a workplace development firm.Perfect your presentation Aft er you submit your resume electronically, you can leise follow up with one in person. Lindenberg advises that if you do this, the presentation needs to be as polished as the resume itself. She recommends using a large white envelope so your papers stay flat and dont need to be folded. Lindenberg suggests stacking the resume on the bottom, then the titelblatt letter and then topping with two or three letters of reference from trusted sources. This way, when the envelope is opened, the recruiter first sees other endorsements, then your cover letter, then your resume.Include some endorsements Let your references help you tell your story, suggests Geordie McClelland, founder and CEO of theThings.biz, a career advancement service designed to help entry-level and early-stage job seekers, especially recent grads and veterans, find jobs. Get back in touch with people you previously worked with and ask them to talk about your greatest strengths. This is a great way to add credib ility to claims you might make about soft skills in your resume, it helps you better speak to your strengths in a cover letter or an interview, and it gives you a reason to get back in touch with people in your network who might not know that you are looking for a job and who may be able to help.

Talk is Cheap, Except in the Phone Interview

Talk is Cheap, Except in the Phone InterviewThe Phone InterviewTalk is Cheap, Except in the Phone InterviewIn the business world, when someone questions whether a colleague can walk the walk or just talk the talk, its usually the walking thats considered mora important. But when it comes to the job search, sometimes talking the talk is the critical element.Think of the phone interview. In many cases, this is the first and quite possibly last chance to market yourself for a position, and if all goes well, it serves as a steppingstone to better things. The downside is that you have only your voice to convince the interviewer youre a worthy candidate. The upside? If you come across well over the phone, you may win an in-person interview. Many employers will use phone interviews, also known as phone screens, when they have a large group of qualified applicants for a position and want to winnow it to a more manageable number say three or four whom they would like to meet in person. On that note, there are three important things to remember about a phone interview1. Be prepared. Always schedule the interview in advance so you can prepare for it, rather than answer a few questions on the spot. Aim for a date and time (even later the same day) when you will have the fewest distractions, and take the call in a place where you know you wont be interrupted. If youll be taking the call on your cell phone, find a spot with the best possible reception. As you would for an in-person interview, research the organization beforehand. Navigate their web site, do a web search on their issues and those in the industry. Jot down questions you would like to ask. Also, review the copy of your resume and cover letter you sent, and match up your skills and qualifications with what you believe to be their needs, so you can sell them on what they would gain by hiring you.2. Be clear and direct. Rehearse the points you believe youll be emphasizing, and make sure to deliver them clearly and wi thout ambiguity. For instanceI have a strong track record of sales experience with computer hardware over the last five years. You have a strong product, and Im confident that my experience can help boost your revenue quickly and raise your rankings among the five players in this market.Even though its a phone interview, you can use your body to your advantage. Walk around the room if you feel it helps you emphasize important points you want to make.3. Be sure the interviewer understands you. After each key point you make, ask the interviewer if what you said was clear. A simple question Is there anything youd like me to add regarding that issue? or, I understand I covered a lot in my answer, is there anything youd like me to review? communicates a sense of thoroughness to the interviewer and lessens the chance that you would not be giving your full story before they decide if they want to meet with you.
